COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The sixth annual Hockey Weekend Across America presented by CCM, will be celebrated across the United States Feb. 15-17.
"Hockey Weekend Across America has become a staple on the hockey calendar in our country," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "Not only is it a time to celebrate the game and those involved at all levels, but it also gives us a chance to share this great sport with those who may not have had the chance to enjoy it previously."
Each of the three days of Hockey Weekend Across America has a theme, including Wear Your Favorite Hockey Jersey, sponsored by ShopUSAHockey.com on Friday; Try Hockey Day, sponsored by the National Hockey League on Saturday; and Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes on Sunday.
The HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com website contains a list of activities across the country for hockey fans and players to get involved in. A sampling of the hundreds of registered events are below.
"Wear Your Favorite Jersey Day" on Friday (Feb. 15) is the day for fans to show off their hockey pride by wearing their prized hockey jerseys. Fans are encouraged to submit their photos to USA Hockey's Facebook and Twitter pages. Use the hashtag #HWAA for Twitter posts.
On Saturday (Feb. 16), some 200 rinks nationwide will host "Try Hockey for Free" clinics, allowing thousands of children to experience hockey for the first time. Visit HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com for more details or to find a rink near you hosting an event.
To cap off the weekend, "Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes" day on Sunday (Feb. 17) encourages hockey programs nationwide to develop ways to honor their local hockey heroes. USA Hockey invites all to post stories about their hockey hero on HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com.
Sunday also features NBC's Hockey Day in America coverage, which includes an NHL doubleheader on NBC (Buffalo at Pittsburgh; Los Angeles at Chicago) and coverage of a third NHL game that evening on NBC Sports Network (Washington at New York Rangers). Along with its game coverage, NBC will also produce content in and around the games showcasing hockey at all levels in the United States.
Now through Feb. 17 fans can enter the Hockey Weekend Across America "Pick Six Sweepstakes" to win one of three grand prizes -- the choice of six of 12 CCM products, including a hockey stick, hockey gloves, helmet/facemask combo, hockey pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, hockey bag, elbow pads, winter jacket, mini-hockey set, sports bag or golf bag. As part of the Hockey Weekend Across America celebration, XM/Sirius' Hockey This Morning will interview a prominent figure in American hockey for five straight days at 9:25 a.m. EST each day beginning on Monday (Feb. 13). A full list of guests appears below.
NHL Network U.S. will air special programming during Hockey Weekend Across America. On Sunday, the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team's three-game playoff run to the gold medal will be shown at 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. ET.
NOTES: Hockey Weekend Across America was created by USA Hockey in 2008 to engage the hockey community in celebrating the sport of hockey at all levels and exposing the sport to new audiences ... The U.S. National Sled Hockey Team will be in action during Hockey Weekend Across America. Team USA will play a three-game exhibition series vs. Canada in Ottawa, Ont., Feb. 14-16 ... Nine NCAA and 21 NHL games will be televised during Hockey Weekend Across America. The schedule is available here ... On Saturday (Feb. 16), the eighth annual Hockey Day in Michigan will be celebrated in cooperation with the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey since 2005. He held the same position from 1993-99 and was USA Hockey's director of public relations from 1978-80, which included serving as the PR contact for the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' Team.
Tuesday, Feb. 12
Jim Johannson, assistant executive director, hockey operations for USA Hockey. The U.S. National Junior Team has enjoyed unprecedented success during Johannson's four years as general manager, winning the gold medal in 2010 and 2013, as well as a bronze medal in 2011.
Wednesday, Feb. 13
Katey Stone, head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team since 2010-11 and the 2014 U.S. Olympic Women's Team. Stone is in her 19th season as the head women's ice hockey coach at Harvard University, where she is the active wins leader in NCAA Division I women's hockey.
Thursday, Feb. 14
Jeff Sauer, head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team. Sauer was the men's ice hockey head coach at both Colorado College (1971-80) and the University of Wisconsin (1983-2002). At UW he won a pair of NCAA national championships (1983, 1990).
Friday, Feb. 15
Ron DeGregorio, president of USA Hockey since 2003. He has been involved with USA Hockey since 1973 and is a recipient of the the Lester Patrick Trophy for his contributions to hockey in the U.S.
USA Hockey and the Amateur Hockey Association Illinois are putting on a Try Hockey for Free clinic outdoors at Soldier Field on Feb. 16 as a part of the Hockey City Classic Winter Festival.
The Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame is holding a Hockey Extravaganza on Feb. 16 where there will be a day of hockey at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.
Rochester, New York
The Rochester Americans have promotions on Feb. 15 and 17. On Feb. 15, any fan wearing their favorite jersey can purchase a best available ticket for $12. On Feb. 17, free admission is offered to all youth and high school hockey players.
On Feb. 16, the Channel Islands Youth Hockey League invites kids aged 5-10 to a Try Hockey for Free clinic at Channel Islands Ice Center.
Kansas City, Missouri
On Feb. 16, the KC Fighting Saints are hosting Try Hockey For Free at Line Creek Community Center from 4:10-5:10 p.m., with public skating to follow from 2-4 p.m.
On Feb. 16, the Connecticut Whale is offering lower level end zone seats for $10 to youth hockey players wearing their team jersey.
Big Sky, Montana
Local NHL Star Marty Pavelich will host a Try Hockey for Free clinic on Feb. 17 from 4-6 p.m. An adult game will follow.
Des Moines, Iowa
On Feb. 16, the Des Moines High School League will host Pink in the Rink Night as all players will wear pink jerseys. Proceeds will go to breast cancer research.
At Oakland Ice Center on Feb. 16, kids ages 4-12 are invited to a Try Hockey for Free clinic.
King & Queen Elementary School is holding an intramural co-ed floor hockey tournament & girls intramural championship on Feb. 15.
At 1 p.m. on Feb. 16, Westland Public Library will welcome veteran hockey broadcaster, Raymond Rolak, to share some of ice hockey's rich history.
